It has been over one year since the catastrophic war broke out in Sudan. This crisis has evolved into one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world. Thousands of people, including children, have been killed. Millions have been displaced and are on the brink of starvation.

Despite the seriousness of this crisis, the Liberal government took 10 months to launch its family reunification program. And since its long-awaited launch in February, not one single person has been approved to come to Canada to be safely reunited with their loved ones.

The government’s words of concern ring hollow to Sudanese Canadians who fear that they may never see their families alive again.

New Democrats, alongside Sudanese Canadians, are demanding the Liberal government to remove the bureaucratic barriers that are preventing Sudanese people, women, and children, from seeking safety here in Canada.

Families cannot wait another year while millions of lives are at risk. Justin Trudeau and his government have failed to act with urgency and have left people who are eligible to come to Canada completely stranded.

Canada must act – and act now.
