Statement regarding Supreme Court of Canada Ruling on Uber Driver Case

Earlier today, NDP Critic for Income Inequality and Affordability Charlie Angus made the following statement:

Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada is a major victory for Canadian workers and recognizes the rights of the millions of Canadians who work in precarious app-based employment.

These workers, and those like them, have often not been seen in the same way as other, more traditional, employees. This has meant that their rights and protections were not recognized as others in the workplace and allowed employers to take advantage of their precarious situation.

As Canada’s economy shifts and the nature of work changes, we must ensure that all workers - especially those on the cutting edge of both technology and employment - are protected.

Today’s decision is a wake-up call for all levels of government to start recognizing these workers as proper employees, whose basic employment rights cannot be signed away. The federal government must stand up for all workers and bring their policies out of the 19th century and into the 21st.”
