Statement by MP Christine Moore on her Political Future

NDP MP Christine Moore (Abitibi-Témiscamingue) issued the following statement:

“I would like to take the time to thank the people of Abitibi-Témiscamingue for the trust and support they’ve given me over the past eight years. The people of my region are extraordinary, hardworking, creative, resourceful, and proud. It has been an honour to bring their voices to the House of Commons.

The people and the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region are the main reasons I decided to become an MP. Many of you have asked me to continue my work and expressed your appreciation for what I’ve accomplished. Surrounded with so much love and trust, and despite the ups and downs I experienced in recent years, it is even more difficult for me to announce that I will not be a candidate in the next federal election.

The work of an MP, when you pour all your heart and energy into the job, can be incredibly demanding. It is even more so when faced every day with the inertia and hypocrisy of old political parties. We were promised, hand on heart, that politics would be done differently. But instead, this government decided to close the door to change and position itself as a defender of the status quo.

My friends, I will not resign myself to conforming to this old way of doing things. I will continue to advocate for progressive ideas and to promote Abitibi-Témiscamingue—but I am choosing to do so in a different way, and not as a Member of Parliament.

I would like to extend a sincere and special thanks to two individuals who believed in me, supported me, trusted me, and knew I was the right person to represent the values of the NDP and the hearts of the people of Abitibi-Témiscamingue: Rebecca Blaikie and Jack Layton.”
