NDP will continue to fight against inequality and food waste

Ottawa – Today, the Liberals and Conservatives voted against Ruth Ellen Brosseau’s (Berthier-Maskinongé) bill seeking to develop a national strategy to reduce food waste in Canada as well as a national food waste awareness day.

“The government had a golden opportunity to be a leader in the fight against food waste. By voting against this bill, the Liberals are saying that the 31 billion dollars’ worth of wasted food and astronomical production of greenhouse gases caused by food waste are not deserving of special attention,” said Brosseau. “My bill would have given the Liberal government the opportunity to consult on how to prevent food waste.”

Canadian consumers lose an average of $771 a year in wasted food. Both Denmark and the United Kingdom reduced food waste by 25% over 5 years and 20% over 4 years respectively. Food waste is everyone’s problem, but unfortunately for Canadians, the Trudeau government is refusing to take action on this issue.

“In my opinion, it is our duty as parliamentarians to reduce inequality and fight against climate change,” said Brosseau. “This bill was a good start. Despite a disappointing response from the Liberals and Conservatives, I will continue to fight to reduce food waste and food insecurity in Canada.”
