NDP Statement on World Food Day

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“In a country as wealthy as Canada, every person should be able to access nutritious food. But in 2016, more than 4 million people didn’t have the food they needed every day. 863,497 Canadians used a food bank every month – and 36% of them were children.

Canadians need a solution to food insecurity right now – and that means supporting local, nutritious food, and ensuring better access to that food for all Canadians – and especially for kids, seniors, and people in rural and northern communities where accessing affordable, nutritious food is still a huge challenge.

Fighting mounting food waste will not solve the problem of food insecurity in Canada, but facilitating the recovery of unsold food and food donations by retailers can help ensure that more food makes its way to those who need it most.

On World Food Day, New Democrats are re-committing to keep pushing for the solutions Canadians need – to make sure that no kid, no family, and no community faces hunger in Canada.”
