NDP statement on World Environment Day

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

On World Environment Day, New Democrats are again demanding action on a national climate emergency. We cannot stand idly by as unprecedented climate emergencies impact more and more people around the world.

Here in Canada, flooding and environment disasters have now become a pattern. Families are losing their homes and property to extreme weather events, farmers are losing crops, more children are suffering from pollution-driven asthma, and we are losing more natural species and fragile ecosystems every day. At the same time, resources to respond to the growing number of climate emergencies are limited, and more and more Canadian families and communities are now at risk of being left behind.

Successive Conservative and Liberal governments failed to set emission reduction targets that were ambitious enough to meet our international agreements, and Canadians are paying the price for this inaction.

New Democrats have a proud tradition of being leaders on climate change and we will not stop.

To the NDP team, setting Canada in the right direction means ending subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, protecting our coastlines from increased pipeline capacity and tanker traffic, and making sure Canada’s biggest emitters are paying their fair share of the carbon tax. We also believe in making concrete investments in a clean energy economy, and creating good jobs for workers, their families, and their communities.

Canadians should be able to count on a government with the courage to do the right thing on climate change.

On this World Environment Day, let’s all commit to working together and doing everything we can to tackle climate change. Because there is no Planet B.
