NDP Statement marking the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

Today we mark a painful day for hundreds of Canadian families. On this day, thirty-four years ago, a heinous act of terrorism took the lives of the 329 people aboard Air India Flight 182 when it exploded over the Atlantic Ocean.

On behalf of all New Democrats, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who lost loved-ones on that fateful day. As we mourn and honour the memory of the victims and stand with their families, we recommit to working to ensure that acts of terror like this never happen again.

Terrorism must never be used to advance the cause of any one group. It only leads to more suffering and more division. That’s why we must continue to fight terrorism and the conditions that fuel it, and why we must always advocate for understanding, peace, and the protection of human rights.

On this day, the NDP stands in solidarity with all those who have felt the anguish of losing a loved-one to an act of terror, here at home and around the world. The impacts of terrorism cannot be erased, but we can honour all victims by working together to build a more peaceful world.
