NDP Statement on Kashechewan Relocation

The NDP Critic for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, Charlie Angus, issued the following statement:

“With Kashechewan on the verge of a mass flood evacuation, the Liberal government has to explain why they broke their word to the community on relocation to high ground. Kashechewan has had a signed agreement to begin the relocation process for years, and the Liberal government must explain why it hasn’t followed through – Justin Trudeau and Bill Morneau’s budget had no money for Kashechewan.
The community’s dike wall is becoming structurally unsafe and could give way, causing massive damage.
The Liberal government has to stop playing games with Kashechewan.
This community was placed on a flood plan by the Government of Canada in the 1950s and efforts to relocate to high ground have been going on for years amidst costly annual evacuations. They have had a signed agreement to relocate for years, but another federal budget came and went this year with no word to the community on plans or funding for relocation.
This is not what a nation-to-nation relationship looks like.”
