NDP Statement on Former Attorney General’s Testimony

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement:

“The evidence received by the Justice Committee today from former AG Jody Wilson-Raybould is so compelling and well-documented that we must have an independent public inquiry to get to the truth about the damning evidence of a campaign of political interference by the Prime Minister. Canadians deserve to know the truth before the next general election.

Now, we all know why during the last weeks Trudeau’s Liberals cherry-picked witnesses, used delay tactics and voted down reasonable attempts to get at the truth, they simply made the cynical decision to put their political interests in front of Canadians’ interests. The Liberals’ partisan games at the Justice Committee have blocked Canadians from learning the truth.

The PMO has tried to spin this as a miscommunication or personal disagreement. What we see in this submission is a lawyer acting in her client’s best interests to protect him from his own recklessness. The former Attorney General repeatedly made clear to the Prime Minister and those around him that their inappropriate actions would be seen as political interference – and they ignored her.

We’re seeing a desperate government that looks more and more like Stephen Harper’s every day – the secrecy and partisanship is exactly what Canadians were tired of when they voted for Justin Trudeau, and he’s failed to deliver anything different.

Canadians are asking for and deserve a fair, transparent public inquiry to get to the bottom of this scandal. Liberal obstruction has gone on for far too long and is damaging Canada’s international credibility.”
