NDP Pushes for Emergency Debate Following Catastrophic Climate Change Report

OTTAWA – On Monday, the New Democratic Party requested an emergency debate in the House of Commons in the wake of the devastating report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

“Wildfires, flooding, heat waves, droughts, extreme storms – Canadians are already feeling the effects of climate change and things will only get worse if we fail to act,” said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. “The Liberals are spending a lot of time attacking the Conservatives for not having a plan for the environment and that’s true, but the Liberals' emission targets are the exact same as the Harper Conservatives'.”

The IPCC report showed that the Liberal greenhouse gas emission targets are woefully inadequate and we’re not even on track to meet them. All countries only have until 2030 to prevent catastrophic climate change.

“Climate change is the single greatest threat the world is facing and it is an emergency we all need to deal with,” said NDP Parliamentary Leader Guy Caron who wrote to the Speaker of the House to request the emergency debate. “Let’s come together and find ways we can do our part to prevent catastrophic climate change and mitigate against what’s already happening.”
