NDP fighting to protect your personal information, while the Liberals let big companies do what they want

NDP Ethics Critic Matthew Green made the following statement in reaction to the Privacy Commissioner's finding that Home Depot Canada sold customers' personal information to Meta without consent:

“New Democrats demand that all Canadians have a right to know and provide consent on how their information is being collected and shared. No one should have to worry about big corporations selling their personal and sensitive information.

Home Depot’s repeated sales of people’s receipts and personal information to Meta is a blatant violation of Canadians’ privacy and is another example of how surveillance capitalism poses as a threat to our most private online information.

The Liberal government is responsible for protecting people from these atrocious violations made by ultra-wealthy CEOs. But they’ve buried their heads in the sand. Justin Trudeau and the Liberals have had seven years to protect people from this kind of underhanded practice, but they’ve dragged their feet on creating any privacy protections with real teeth. The Conservatives had ten years before them to beef up consumer protections — they failed.

New Democrats believe Canadians deserve a government that puts your safety and privacy above the profits of companies.”
