NDP Calls on Liberals to Walk Their Talk on Women’s Rights

OTTAWA – This week, with the federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for the Status of Women meeting in Yukon, the NDP Critic for Women’s Equality, Sheila Malcolmson, sent a letter to the Minister calling on the Liberals to walk their talk on issues that are critical to Canadian women. The letter also calls on the Minister to ensure these important issues are on the agenda during this week’s meetings.
“Women throughout Canada are counting on this government to tackle the barriers that disproportionately harm women,” said Malcolmson. “From pay equity, to childcare, to ending violence against women, to employment insurance reforms, the Liberals have promised so much in their three years in power, but have delivered little when it comes to the help that Canadian women urgently need.”
Last June, an NDP report to Parliament outlined the federal legislation needed to advance economic justice for women. But no legislation has been implemented, and no concrete measures have been put in place to ensure women in Canada do not fall further into precarious work and poverty. Among the priorities proposed by the NDP, one is ending violence against women, including campus sexual violence and domestic violence, through a National Action Plan.
“Ending violence against women and girls should be a top priority for this Minister, and for this forum,” added NDP deputy Critic for Women’s Equality, Anne Minh-Thu Quach. “Not only did the all-party Status of Women committee unanimously recommend federal leadership on this, but we know too well that far too many women and girls face violence every single day, including young women on university campuses. Women are done waiting: it’s time to act now.”
