NDP calls on Liberals to Fund Women, Peace and Security Agenda

OTTAWA – New Democrats welcome the creation of the Women, Peace and Security Ambassador. Although this is a step in the right direction, NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Hélène Laverdière (Laurier – Sainte-Marie) calls on the Liberal government to guarantee funding for the newly created Women, Peace and Security Ambassador.

“Although I welcome the creation of the office, I was disappointed that during debate, the Liberals rejected our amendment to allocate additional funding to support the new Ambassador, his or her mandate and the full realization of Canada’s National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security,” said Laverdière. “Canadians deserve better than to see the Liberal government’s consistent failure to adequately fund its so-called Feminist Foreign Policy."

In a recent report, the UN Secretary General noted that the wealth of policies and programming relating to the Women, Peace and Security agenda “require increased, innovative and sustained political force and financing.” At a time when Canada is vying for a seat on the UN Security Council, financing its international commitments is essential to improving our international standing.

“The National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security is nothing more than rhetoric without a dedicated line in the budget,” said NDP MP Rachel Blaney.
