NDP Calls for Full-Scale Emergency Meeting to Prevent Auto-Sector Job Losses

OTTAWA – NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called on Prime Minister Trudeau to hold an urgent gathering to find solutions to the job losses at the General Motors plant in Oshawa, as well as prevent future job losses in the auto-sector.

“The news from GM is devastating for the families of the 2,500 workers in the Oshawa plant, but also for the thousands more whose livelihoods depend on that plant,” said Singh “Mr. Trudeau’s strategy is failing and without an urgent change of course, Oshawa will only be the beginning.”

Singh said the gathering should occur in the next two weeks and should include representatives from industry, labour and all three levels of government.

“Prime Minister Trudeau needs to call that meeting now, and have a plan ready to put on the table – a plan that will save these jobs and ensure that Canada’s auto industry doesn’t just survive but thrives into the future.”
