Mathyssen Appointed NDP Critic for Women’s Equality

OTTAWA – MP Irene Mathyssen (London-Fanshawe) is the new NDP Critic for Women’s Equality.
Mathyssen takes on the role from Sheila Malcolmson who retired from the House of Commons in order to run for a provincial seat in British Columbia. Mathyssen is reprising her role as NDP Women’s Critic, previously held from 2006 to 2011, and is looking forward to the challenge.

“I am happy to be returning to Women’s Equality as NDP Critic, and grateful for the trust placed in me by NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh,” states Mathyssen. “I look forward to carrying on the good work of NDP Women’s Equality Critics such as Sheila Malcolmson, Niki Ashton and Francoise Boivin, and working to improve women’s equity in Canada’s governments, communities and workplaces.”

Mathyssen retains the role of NDP Critic for Canada Post, and will represent the NDP on the Status of Women Parliamentary Committee as Vice-Chair.

“I’m ready to roll up my sleeves,” said Mathyssen. “We’ve come a long way, but there is still a lot of work to be done in achieving full equality and equity for women in Canada.”
