Liberals Failed to Fight for Workers in Windsor

OTTAWA – Last week, Fiat Chrysler (FCA) announced it was eliminating the third shift at the Windsor Assembly plant starting September 30, 2019. People in Windsor will pay the price as Fiat Chrysler will cut 1,500 direct jobs. This is another devastating blow for Canadian workers, their families and their communities, after the announcement of the GM plant closure in Oshawa.

“Once again, families are going to be left out in the cold because the Liberals failed to introduce a national auto strategy and failed to protect the manufacturing sector,” said the Leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh. “Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government had many opportunities to do the right thing and protect the good jobs Canadians rely on. Instead, they’ve abandoned the manufacturing sector and the families that rely on it.”

Justin Trudeau’s Budget 2019 failed to allocate new domestic auto investment that would save Canadian jobs. Instead, the Liberals earmarked $300 million in purchase incentives that excluded the only Canadian built electric vehicle, the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid, completely abandoning the Canadian manufacturing sector.

“This is an insult to all businesses and workers in the Canadian auto sector. The NDP has been calling for a National Auto Strategy precisely to avoid these major jobs losses that hurt Canadian families and their communities,” said NDP Innovation, Science and Economic Development Critic, Brian Masse. “Liberals cannot sit back and wait until there is no auto industry in Canada. They need to act and invest now so we ensure the future of manufacturing jobs in Windsor and across Canada.”
