Jagmeet Singh Pledges to Invest in Quebec Clean Energy

TROIS-RIVIÈRES – In a speech to NDP supporters assembled for the federal party's Quebec Section Convention in Trois-Rivières on Saturday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh stated that environment will be a core element of the NDP platform in 2019. Singh pledged that an NDP government will invest to help Quebec become a world leader in the electrification of transportation and create a fund to help cities build clean energy projects.

“The biogas plant in Saint-Hyacinthe is an example of success in clean energy development. The choice is clear: these are the types of projects that we should invest in, not a 65 years old pipeline," Singh said. "The electrification of transportation is another example. Quebec has a huge potential in this sector and, if the federal government steps up, Quebec could become a world leader. The battle against climate change is our most important fight. It's time to take action!”

Singh promises that, contrarily to the Liberals and the Conservatives, the NDP will have the courage to make the big changes that need to happen right now. Singh is firmly against the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, the bitumen pipeline that Justin Trudeau purchased for $4.5 billion in tax dollars with plans to spend another $9 billion. Meanwhile, Andrew Scheer is trying to revive the Energy East pipeline that Quebecers rejected.

“Last summer, in Quebec, at least 70 persons died because of the heat waves. The ecological crisis is real and comes at a high cost. If we don't do anything, the situation will only get worse, incredibly fast, " Singh added. "The people of Quebec deserve a government who invests to create good, green jobs. Today, we have a government who does the exact opposite, buying a pipeline and investing billions in the oil industry.”
