Environment Commissioner Tears into Liberals Again

On Tuesday, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development has once again tore into the Liberal government. Her fall reports show that the Liberals are not doing enough to protect Canadians and marine mammals. Among other things, she criticized the government for its inability to measure whether or not its own goals have been reached, especially in terms of toxic chemicals.

“Watching the Liberals handle environmental matters is like watching someone trying to get to the North Pole without a compass,” said Alexandre Boulerice, the NDP Critic for the Environment. “They don’t know where they’re going. Even if the government has adopted regulations to control the risks associated with toxic chemicals, the Commissioner noted that there is no follow-up process to evaluate their effectiveness. It’s very, very alarming, and shows just how two-faced Justin Trudeau is when it comes to the environment”.

The Commissioner added that Fisheries and Oceans Canada, along with other departments, including Environment Canada, waited too long before implementing effective measures to protect marine mammals.

“After a decade of Conservative inaction, the Liberals are now following in their footsteps,” said Fin Donnelly, the NDP Critic for Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard. “The Environment Commissioner’s report confirms the government is failing marine mammals. Of the 14 endangered or threatened species, they have no specific measures in place to save 11 of them. Their plan seems to be to wait for disaster to strike before actually doing something. How many more whales will have to die before the government takes action?”
