OTTAWA – New Democrats are urging the Government to Canada to make the Canadian Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team (D.A.R.T.) available to assist with relief and reconstruction operations, in the wake of the recent natural disasters in the Philippines, Samoa and Indonesia.
“D.A.R.T. is specifically designed to provide emergency relief,” said New Democrat Leader Jack Layton. “They supply basic medical care, safe drinking water, repair necessary infrastructure and set up communication between the afflicted country, U.N. aid agencies and non-governmental organizations. D.A.R.T. has helped disaster victims around the world.”
The Government of Canada has an obligation to do whatever it can to assist with these terrible tragedies.
New Democrat MPs are also encouraging individuals to contribute to relief and reconstruction efforts by making donations to the Red Cross.
New Democrat MP Don Davies (Vancouver-Kingsway) said this is a time for the community to come together for those in need. “Typhoon Ketsana has left the Philippines devastated, and people are suffering in Samoa and in Indonesia. As Canadians, it’s our obligation to do something to help. I’m inviting my constituents to donate generously – every little bit helps."
Earlier today, all New Democrat MPs joined their leader Jack Layton in his statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating destruction and loss of life in the Philippines due to Typhoon Ketsana, and the recent tsunami in Samoa and the earthquake in Indonesia.
“Seeing those heartbreaking images of homes, businesses and streets destroyed after the storms reminds us of the fragility of the lives and livelihoods of so many, and of how easily so much can be swept away.
“On behalf of all New Democrats, I extend my sympathies to those families who have lost loved ones and homes, and to those Canadians with family and friends in the Philippines, Samoa and Indonesia. You are in our hearts and thoughts.”
