OTTAWA – Automakers and the aftermarket industry have come to a landmark agreement to fulfill the purpose of the legislation set out in the New Democrat Right to Repair Bill (C-273). Both parties have agreed, before a House of Commons committee, to establish a system that parallels the market place in the United States.
“This is a victory for every Canadian automobile owner. They now have a choice about the repair and maintenance of their vehicles, and emission standards and public safety are now guaranteed,” said New Democrat Industry and Automotive Critic Brian Masse.
On-board diagnostic capabilities are contained in approximately 59% of vehicles on the road in Canada. The use of computer-control units is essential for proper vehicle maintenance. Difficulty in obtaining this equipment from vehicle manufacturers has created significant consumer concern and competitive barriers. Bill C-273 resolves these issues and guarantees a level playing field. The agreement struck yesterday will satisfy the goals of the bill when completely implemented.
Masse’s Private Member’s Right to Repair Bill (C-273) passed second reading in the House of Commons earlier this year with a vote 247 to 18. The agreement struck yesterday was initially developed by the automakers in reaction to this overwhelming support. Additional commitments were made by the automakers and accepted by the aftermarket at the industry committee.
“I'd like to thank the thousands of Canadians across the country whose determined efforts for the last three years have led to this victory,” said Masse. “The industry has moved from denial to acceptance all the way to setting up the system to resolve the right-to-repair issue once and for all. The money saved by consumers will be enormous and at this time the need for more legislation no longer exists. Every vehicle owner in the country has gotten their rights back.”
