OTTAWA – After a week of being contradicted by Premiers and Liberal members of his own Caucus, Michael Ignatieff admitted yesterday that he will not oppose the Conservative government’s HST scheme. In fact, he suggested that the HST should be expanded to the rest of the country.
“By flip-flopping on this issue, Mr. Ignatieff is siding with Stephen Harper not Canadian families,” said New Democrat Don Davies (Vancouver Kingsway). “He used to say that the HST schemes were ‘dishonest’. Now he’s suggesting that all Canadians should pay the Liberal-Conservative tax hike.”
When asked about the HST during a media scrum, Ignatieff said, “the right way to do this is to get a national plan for the harmonized sales tax.” This is in direct contradiction to what Liberal MPs like Ujjal Dosanjh have said in BC, calling the tax hike “absolutely horrendous” and “criminal”.
“In the middle of a recession, Mr. Ignatieff is fanning the flames of a Conservative plan to raise taxes,” said Davies. “Mr Ignatieff owes it to Canadians to say how he will direct his caucus to vote when the HST comes to the floor of the House of Commons.”
