OTTAWA – New Democrats are pleased that Parliament has expressed its support for protecting the French language in Quebec by voting unanimously in favour of the NDP opposition day motion.
The motion, tabled by New Democrat MP Thomas Mulcair (Outremont), recognizes the Quebec government’s right to ensure that all immigrants that arrive in the province learn French first and foremost.
“The recent judgement by the Supreme Court has the potential to re-open the painful debate on language rights. It was critical for the House of Commons to recognize Quebec’s right to protect the French language,” said Mulcair, deputy leader of the New Democrats.
“Canadians from coast to coast to coast celebrate the rich culture of Quebec and are proud of the strength of its francophone institutions. Making the French language stronger must be a priority and the New Democratic Party is proud to be of help,” said New Democrat leader Jack Layton.
