I was shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting of two RCMP officers in Southeastern Alberta today.

The officers, who were responding to a call in the town of Killam, were on duty serving their community. Police officers put themselves on the line every single day to protect families all across the country. When one is wounded in the line of duty, we grieve as a nation. Their selflessness and dedication keep our towns and communities safe.

On behalf of Canada’s Official Opposition, NDP leader Nycole Turmel congratulates the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee. 2012 marks the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne.

The Jubilee provides an opportunity for all Canadians to mark the Queen’s lifetime of public service.

New Democrats join all Canadians in thanking the Queen for her continued dedication and service.

The New Democratic Party condemns the reported massacre in Homs yesterday by Syrian forces.

New Democrats stand in solidarity with the Syrian people and their democratic aspirations. We categorically condemn the Syrian government’s violent crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy protests and are alarmed at the escalation in violence by Syrian forces yesterday. Canada should immediately recall our ambassador from Syria.

OTTAWA – I have just concluded a face to face meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The meeting was cordial and focussed on the upcoming budget.

I urged Mr. Harper to ensure that the upcoming budget does not harm families or cut the services they rely on in these tough times. I also urged him, in the face of rising unemployment numbers and yet another plant closing today, to ensure his budget focusses on real job creation above all else.

Black History Month is a wonderful opportunity for Canadians to celebrate the history and accomplishments of the members of the Black community in our country and around the world. This is also an occasion to thank the African-Canadians for the vital contributions they’ve made to improve Canadian society for everyone.

Today marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the largest Nazi death camps. The United Nations declared this day as International Holocaust Remembrance Day so that we have the opportunity to honour the memory of Holocaust victims.

The NDP has a long standing position in support of a humane, market driven and sustainable commercial seal harvest. We also strongly defend the rights of the Inuit to engage in their traditional and commercial seal harvest. And as the industry faces challenges and changes, we must all be focused on working together with those who rely on the seal harvest for their livelihoods to address these very real challenges.

    ‪Nin Hao.

‪On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada, I wish you and your family a Happy New Year as you celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

‪The Dragon is respected in Chinese lore because it represents good fortune. Dragons foster bold ideas, grand gestures, and great ambition. They are confident and fearlessly take on challenges.

It’s time to come together around these values once again and make change happen in this special New Year.

Again, we wish you and your family the best of health and happiness.

    Happy New Year!
    Gung Hay Fat Choy!

On this day marking the second anniversary of a devastating earthquake in Haiti, I urge the government to continue their aid efforts to this country. I thank all Canadians who have helped this nation on its road to recovery from this devastating event.

I am happy to learn that Canada is going to finance a project to resettle 20,000 people, but more than half a million Haitians are still living in makeshift shelters and miserable conditions. It is crucial that our government and those of other donor nations live up to their commitments to help with the reconstruction of Haiti.

Like many Canadians, I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jean Pigott. Ms. Pigott left her mark as a pioneer—both in politics and business—and as a passionate builder of Canada’s capital city.

In 1976, Ms. Pigott earned an impressive byelection win to become one of just two women in the Progressive Conservative caucus. She became a strong advocate for gender equality and inspired a generation of female politicians.

Before that Ms. Pigott was one of only a handful of female CEOs in Canada, and served as the first female director of Ontario Hydro.

As we gather with friends and family to celebrate the New Year, we are compelled to look back at the year that was and think about what we’d like to see in the year ahead. 2011 has brought unique joys, challenges, and lessons to us all.

For New Democrats, it was both the best and the worst of times. We celebrated a historic victory when over four-and-a-half million Canadians voted to send 103 New Democrat MPs to Ottawa, making it the Official Opposition to Stephen Harper’s Conservative government. On a sad note, we mourned the tragic loss of our beloved leader, Jack Layton.

    Merry Christmas!

The holiday season is a time to reconnect with family, be grateful for your loved ones, reflect on the year that has passed, and embrace the possibilities the New Year brings.

This time of year brings out the best of Canadians’ giving spirit. In 2011, we have seen hardships across the country and across the globe, and this Christmas, I hope that we can all reach out a bit further.

Christmas is about celebrating new hope, and regardless of faith, culture, tradition or heritage, hope is something we can all believe in.

Conservatives making crank calls to disrupt other party’s campaigns is reprehensible. And according to Elections Canada, this isn’t even the end of it.

New Democrats are challenging Stephen Harper to come clean today about the Conservative Party’s involvement with crank calls and other voter suppression techniques during the election campaign.

Harper can start by answering the following questions:

    1. How many Conservative offices were involved in crank calls?

On behalf of New Democrats across Canada I wish you a Hanukkah filled with joy and hope for a bright future.

The next eight nights are a time for remembering the blessings that we have and the accomplishments of those who came before us. It is a time to remind ourselves of challenges to overcome, to reflect on the beliefs we hold dear, and to re-affirm our commitment to a better world for everyone.

Today the world marks the death of a dictator. New Democrats join those worldwide who hope that the future will see an end to the tyranny and repression that North Korean people have suffered for far too long.

With the passing of Kim Jong-il, the people of North Korea face great uncertainty. Very little is known about the new leader and it is difficult to predict what will happen in the days and months ahead.

It was with great sadness that I learned about the death Sunday of ex-Czech president, Vaclav Havel, following a long illness at the age of 75.

He was the craftsman of the 1989 anti-communist “velvet revolution” and became president of Czechoslovakia and of the Czech Republic from 1989 to 2003.

While this deal represents some progress, we are disappointed that Canada did not play a leadership role in last week’s discussions in Durban.

Unfortunately, Conservative inaction has shut Canada out of the group of nations that will make a difference in future negotiations. While the door is still open to a new climate change treaty, no legally binding emissions reductions will take place for almost a decade.

  • December 6, 2011

Today, on this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, my thoughts turn to 14 young women whose lives were so brutally cut short on December 6, 1989.

Twenty-two years after the massacre at l’École Polytechnique in Montréal, we are still mourning the loss of these women and we will remember them always. But this is not enough.

  • December 3, 2011

Today, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, New Democrats call on the government of Canada to show leadership and help improve the lives of the estimated 4.4 million Canadians living with disabilities.

Too often, people with disabilities are expected to participate less and accept the barriers that exclude them from all aspects of Canadian life. But that is simply unacceptable and we cannot continue to allow citizens to go without access to the support they need.

  • December 2, 2011

The New Democratic Party of Canada condemns the hateful and threatening letter to the Toronto Chinese Business Association earlier this week.

The racist targeting of the Chinese community and businesses is something New Democrats will not condone or ignore. Actions or threats of violence and criminal activity will not be tolerated.

The letter, allegedly signed by an unknown group calling itself Animal Liberation Canada/USA, which used racist language, and threatened to poison and contaminate Chinese restaurants in Toronto’s Chinatown.

This World AIDS Day, the New Democratic Party of Canada recognizes the courage and determination of those suffering from this disease and also salutes the 30 years of hard work by researchers and the generosity of donors devoted to finding a cure. That is why New Democrat MPs wore red ribbons in the House of Commons, raising discussions about HIV/AIDS.

  • November 30, 2011

New Democrats commend the United Nations Security Council for removing Abousfian Abdelrazik from its 1267 list, despite the inaction of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives.

For years, while Mr. Abdelrazik remained in limbo in Sudan, New Democrats pressured the Conservatives to take up Mr. Abdelrazik’s case, but they refused. Even after being cleared of all links to terrorism, the government has allowed Mr. Abdelrazik to linger on this list. The list freezes assets and prevents travel, making it impossible for him to find a job or receive child support.

  • November 25, 2011

Today New Democrats stand in solidarity with the voices around the world who are speaking out against gender violence.

As we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we remember the plight of so many voiceless victims. Tragically, one in three women will be abused in her lifetime, often by someone she knows.

    Assalam-O-Alaikum and Eid Mubarak!

During this special time, as Muslims are coming together to share the values of sacrifice and devotion, the New Democratic Party of Canada wishes you all a Happy Eid al-Adha as you celebrate and reflect with your family, friends and community.

Eid-al-Adha is also a time to gather to celebrate unity, forgiveness, charity and peace.

In the spirit of peace and friendship, Eid Mubarak!

The number one priority for Canadian families is jobs.

And this out-of-touch government is failing these families. Badly.

Today we learn that — in a single month — more than 71,000 full-time jobs vanished under the Conservatives’ mismanagement.

And what does the Conservative Finance Minister have to say to those with bills to pay and no paycheque to rely on?

    Only that he’s “disappointed”.

That’s not something Canadian families can take to the bank.
