Statement by New Democrat Leader Jack Layton on the passing of Todd Hardy, former Leader of the Yukon New Democratic Party
It is with a feeling of great sadness that I learned of the passing of former Yukon NDP Leader Todd Hardy, who died Wednesday at age 53 after a long battle with leukemia.
Like so many who know him, I was buoyed by his strength and sense of optimism in facing such a devastating disease. He kept his spirits high and retained his great sense of humour and was simply an inspiration.
Todd was first elected to the Yukon legislature in 1996, after a career as a carpenter and labour negotiator. In 2002, he became leader of Yukon’s New Democrats. His illness forced him to step down as leader in 2009, but he stayed on as an MLA, continuing to passionately represent the people of Whitehorse Centre.
He was an enthusiastic and courageous man who proudly stood up for Yukoners at every opportunity. He was greatly involved in his community as a dedicated volunteer and contributed so much to his City, territory and his country.
Todd passed away in his home, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his wife, former Yukon NDP MP Louise Hardy, their four children, their granddaughter and the community of Whitehorse Centre, which he passionately represented in the Legislature until the very end. I would like to pay special tribute to Louise, whose strength throughout was inspiring.
On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada and New Democrats around the country, I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to Louise and to all those who knew and loved Todd. He will be dearly remembered.
