Almost two weeks after the Olympic flame was extinguished, it will be relit tonight. Vancouver will once again be host to elite athletes from around the world proudly representing their countries in inspiring competition – this time, for the Paralympic Games.
The top Paralympic competitors from more than 40 countries will spend the next 10 days on the world stage. While these athletes may not be household names, their drive and determination will burn no less bright and the competition will be no less thrilling.
The streets of Vancouver are being re-energised by the Olympic spirit, and I look forward to the excitement spreading across our country. We will once again witness displays of athletic excellence, thrills of triumph and the chills of defeat. The possibility of more medals and a “threepeat” for hockey gold will keep us cheering. In the end, however, it will surely be the spirit and perseverance that will truly inspire us.
To all of the competitors, I wish you a successful and fulfilling games! And to our Canadian athletes, on behalf of New Democrats from coast to coast to coast, good luck! We’re behind you.
Go Canada Go!
