On behalf of the New Democratic Party, I convey my deepest sympathies to the Chilean people as they recover and cope with the devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday. Aftershocks are still being felt and Tsunami warnings were issued around the Pacific Rim. An estimated 700 people are dead, with over two million affected. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone touched by this tragedy.
We urge the Canadian government to extend a helping hand to the Chilean people to ensure vital medical supplies, water, clothing and shelter are provided. Just as Canadians demonstrated their generosity for Haiti, I hope they will donate to aid agencies active in the region, such as the Canadian Red Cross.
We are also concerned about the estimated 5,000 Canadians who reside in Chile, approximately 1,000 in the affected areas. If you are unsure of the status of loved ones in Chile, families and friends should contact consular services at the Canadian Embassy in Santiago, or call DFAIT’s emergency centre at 1-800-387-3124.
