Statement by NDP Leader Jack Layton on the death of Jim Fulton

ST. JOHN’S – "Today, along with every Canadian who believes in environmental justice, I am mourning the death of Jim Fulton."

"Jim devoted his life to a movement that few understood when he began speaking out. It is thanks to pioneers like him that people all across Canada are now aware of our responsibility to be good stewards of our earth, air and water. "

"As a Member of Parliament, Jim was a fine example of the passion and pragmatism combined. He consulted with First Nations communities, recognizing their long-standing commitment to the environment, and made sure that their voices were heard. He did not shy away from debate, but rather embraced all opportunities to advance environmental responsibility."

"Jim brought his leadership to the David Suzuki foundation and the good work that this organization has done is indisputable. The contributions of this man to Canadian society were momentous and I only hope that we honour his memory by continuing to fight for environmental justice with the same dedication and vigour."

"Jim Fulton was a larger than life presence whose irresistible enthusiasm combined with a deep sense of hope and optimism left you changed whenever you had the opportunity to be with him.

"To all his dear friends, to those with whom he worked and to his family, I offer heartfelt condolences on behalf of New Democrats across Canada."
