Michael Ignatieff seems a little concerned about Jack Layton’s experience. We welcome the opportunity to compare Mr. Layton's record and experience with that of Mr. Ignatieff.
Jack Layton has been in public service for three decades. He was elected seven times to Toronto City Council, where he worked to improve services within balanced budgets.
He has served as president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Chair of the Toronto Board of Health, Vice Chair of Toronto Hydro, and Deputy Mayor of Toronto.
He successfully re-wrote the 2005 federal budget securing $4.6 billion for affordable housing, training, public transit, energy efficiency, development assistance and wage protection. He was elected by thousands of Party members during a leadership race and has increased the number of MPs elected under his leadership each and every campaign. In 2010 he both toured the country extensively and had a 94% attendance record for votes.
Michael Ignatieff, by contrast, was coronated by his party and has never served in a decision making role at any level of government.
Even as an MP, Michael Ignatieff has more success missing votes than casting them.
Mr. Ignatieff is correct to point out that experience is important. We're glad Canadians have the opportunity to compare his to Mr.Layton's and make their decisions on which leader they prefer based on it.
