Masse declares victory as 'Right to Repair' bill passes in house

OTTAWA - Today, New Democrat Industry and Auto Sector Critic Brian Masse declared a victory for consumers, the environment and public safety as his legislation, Bill C-273 (the Right to Repair), passed the second reading vote in House of Commons.

“Today, the House of Commons chose to side with every vehicle owner in the country, with protecting the environment, with the public’s safety instead of a group of foreign companies,” stated Masse.

The bill, originally introduced two years ago, has been the centre of significant debate.

As cars and trucks become more advanced, the use of computer control units is essential for their operations. Independent auto repair shops have faced significant difficulties in accessing the tools and software required for repair, limiting consumer choice and challenging the effectiveness of emissions and public safety regulations. The Bill ensures a level playing field and creates the mechanism for disclosure and licensing.

“No environmental or consumer protection rule is voluntary. No public safety measure is voluntary. A law is the only real protection for vehicle owners that is available,” said Masse. “Bill C-273 provides for Canadians to make those decisions,” he added.

• Bill C-273, the “Right-to-Repair Act”, has been endorsed by the Automotive Industries Association, CAA, Pollution Probe, The Retail Council, Canadian Association of Retire Persons, Building Trade Council and numerous other automotive organizations.
• The vote today happens to be on the seventh anniversary of Masse first being elected to the House.
