OTTAWA – New Democrat Leader Jack Layton announced the party’s shadow cabinet and executive positions today. Layton’s team features 12 new faces to the House of Commons and he is excited to see his expanded team in action.
“New Democrats are ready for this session of the House. We are ready to stick up for ordinary Canadians and fight for their jobs, pensions and fight for a Canada where no one picks winners and losers,” said Layton. “I have a strong and very experienced team of parliamentarians ready to be both honest brokers and unwavering critics of this government.”
Layton also announced he was making no changes to his strong executive team: Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North) will continue as caucus chair, Libby Davies (Vancouver East) as House leader and deputy leader and Thomas Mulcair (Outremont) as deputy leader. Yvon Godin (Acadie-Bathurst) will serve his fourth term as New Democrat whip.
Layton reiterated that NDP MPs will be honest brokers in this minority Parliament and, when warranted, tireless critics.
“Canadians elected Stephen Harper prime minister, but they voted for New Democrats to balance the Conservative agenda. We’re ready to roll up our sleeves and get results,” said Layton.
