Yesterday, after the NDP announced the entry of star candidate Romeo Saganash in the race for Abitibi-Baie James- Nunavik-Eeyou, Bloc Quebecois incumbent Yvon Levesque had the following to say:
“Some constituents will no longer vote for the New Democrats since they have decided to run an Aboriginal candidate…. [translation]. ”
(Rue Frontenac, March 31 2011).
Claiming the people of Abitibi-Baie James- Nunavik-Eeyou are racist and will not vote for Saganash based on his ethnicity tells more about Levesque than anyone else. You would think—being a representative of his community for almost a decade— that Levesque would know who the members of his community are. One third of the riding is aboriginal, and will see in Romeo Saganash what the NDP sees: a fantastic candidate who will represent their, and all Canadians’, interests in Ottawa.
