Allen tables bill to exempt GST on poppies

OTTAWA – New Democrat MP Malcolm Allen (Welland) today introduced a private members bill intended to support the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign by eliminating the GST from the purchase of poppies and poppy wreathes.

“Exempting the GST from the Royal Canadian Legion’s purchase of poppies and poppy wreathes for its annual campaign will directly support their fundraising goals by reducing the overall cost of the campaign,” said Allen. “It is incumbent for governments to make every effort to support Canada’s veterans and committing to this exemption will convey the respect the honour our veterans rightfully deserve.”

The Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign is a vital Canadian tradition that raises essential funds destined to support Canadian ex-service members and their dependents as well as Commonwealth veterans of World War II.
