• First elected to the House of Commons in 1997, re-elected in 2000, 2004, and 2006
• Born in Heerlen, Netherlands; grew up in Richmond, B.C.; lived in Watson Lake, Yukon, for nine years and moved to Nova Scotia in 1988
• Received the Green MP Award from the Sierra Legal Defense Fund, and has been recognized by the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation and the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment
• Worked at Canadian Airlines for 18 years and is on the Community Advisory Committee at the Halifax International Airport
• Member of several community service organizations
• Member of the Riverlake Men's Rugby team and the Sackville Masters soccer team
• Lives with his wife Andrea and two daughters in Windsor Junction
