- Winner of the A. Lorne Cassidy Award for work with children with special needs
- Member of the board of the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization and a member of Fair Vote Canada
- Actively involved with the Coalition for a Healthy Ottawa and the Partnership for a Pesticide Bylaw
- Lives in the Rideau Gardens neighbourhood of Ottawa Centre with his wife Julia Sneyd and their two children
