Victory for Thalidomide victims

Following a five-decade battle for recognition and support, Thalidomide victims will finally get the support they need, after all parties rallied behind the NDP’s motion last week to compensate them.

“Thalidomide victims have waited 50 years to get the government’s support. We wish it had come sooner, but we’re pleased that they will finally receive the compensation they deserve thanks to our motion,” said NDP Health critic Libby Davies (Vancouver East).

Thalidomide is a sedative that was used to relieve nausea in pregnant women in the 1960s, but had terrible side effects on the embryos. The Canadian government delayed recalling the drug, and never issued an apology or provided adequate compensation for the harm it caused the many victims.

“The victims’ needs continue to evolve over time. The government should process this compensation without delay,” added NDP MP Djaouida Sellah (Saint-Bruno—Saint-Hubert).
