Tom Mulcair calls for donation matching program for Syria relief efforts

Today, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair called on the Canadian Government to match donations made to registered Canadian charities involved in Syrian refugee relief efforts.

“Time and time again, when a humanitarian crisis has struck, Canadians have answered the call with generosity. It’s time for us to come together to do it again,” said Mulcair. “That’s why I am calling on the Prime Minister to show compassion and establish a matching fund program whereby the Canadian government matches, dollar for dollar, all donations made to registered charities providing aide to Syrian refugees.”

Yesterday, Mulcair and his wife Catherine stopped at the offices of the Canadian Red Cross in Peterborough, where they made a donation to support aid for refugees from Syria, as well as from Afghanistan and Iraq.

“I encourage everyone with the means to make a donation to a registered charity, sponsor a family or become involved in a community effort. Together, we can make a difference,” said Mulcair.
