NDP calls on Liberal government to renew federal funding before January 1st

In only a few days, several agreements between the federal government and social and cooperative housing providers will expire. New Democrats are calling on the Liberal government to honour its commitment to renew the agreements.

“The Liberal government must act quickly to prevent thousands of households from being affected by rent increases in a few days. Some people could end up on the street,” said NDP Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga). “The clock is ticking for thousands of families across the country – the time for action is now.”

Long-term agreements between the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and housing providers affect more than 620,000 social housing units across the country. Without renewed federal funding, more than 25,000 households will suffer including 5,200 in Quebec.

The Liberals promised to renew these agreements during the election campaign, but didn’t confirm their intentions or provide a timeline when questioned in the House of Commons last week.

“With the holidays only a few days away, let’s work together to ensure that everyone has a roof over their head” said Boutin-Sweet. “As the progressive opposition, we’re here to get results for Canadians.”
