Statement by Tyrone Benskin on rejection of his bill to support artists

The Conservatives have once again missed an opportunity to show their support for Canadian artists by rejecting my private member’s bill which would have given a well-deserved boost to our artists and creators.

This balanced bill included similar measures already in place in Quebec and many foreign countries and would have allowed artists to average their income in spiked earning years and obtain a tax exemption on a certain portion of their income.

At the heart of our heritage and identity, our artists also contribute to the vitality of our economy and deserve our full support. Unfortunately, the Conservatives continue to undervalue our artists. Their complacency is threatening our culture.

New Democrats will continue to showcase the work of our artists and support them so they may pursue their path.
