Statement by Tom Mulcair on selection of Joe Comartin as new Deputy Speaker

On behalf of New Democrats, I offer my sincere congratulations to Joe Comartin (Windsor-Tecumseh) on being selected the new Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

Elected for the first time in 2000, Mr. Comartin has served with distinction as the Opposition House Leader, Justice critic, Environment critic, Public Safety critic and most recently as our Democratic and Parliamentary Reform critic.

M. Comartin has three times been voted by his peers “the most knowledgeable MP” in the Maclean's/Dominion Awards.

His experience and vast knowledge will serve him well in his new role. Like his predecessor, Denise Savoie, he will encourage civility, help ensure the smooth running of the House and help restore Canadians’ confidence in their democratic institutions.

New Democrat MPs have complete confidence in Mr. Comartin and we all are looking forward to working with him in his new role.
