The NDP’s Health Critic, Libby Davies (Vancouver-East), made the following statement for World Mental Health Day:
“Every year on October 10, we acknowledge World Mental Health Day by speaking out again the stigmatization of mental illness.
For many Canadians living with mental illness, it’s a reality they must deal with daily.
One in five Canadians is affected by mental illness in their lifetime and these people need support from their loved ones and openness from society to face and cure their illness. We must encourage Canadians who are suffering to get help by talking openly about mental health issues. This would help to break down prejudices that prevent too many Canadians from getting the help they need.
The NDP also believes that the government must implement a national action plan for mental health. We must do everything possible to find ways to improve the lives of people living with mental illness. It could happen to one of your loved ones. Let’s ensure we meet their needs”.
