Statement by the Official Opposition on Pongal

Official Opposition MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan (Scarborough – Rouge River) made the following statement on Pongal:

“Today I would like to extend my best wishes to all Canadians of Tamil heritage who are celebrating Thai Pongal.

Pongal is the largest harvest festival of the year and a special time for Tamils to give thanks for the year past and celebrate the opportunities of the future. This harvest festival under many names is celebrated throughout many cultures in South Asia.

I would also like to highlight January as Tamil heritage month as we continue to celebrate the contributions made by the community to Canada’s social, cultural and economic development.

On behalf of the entire NDP caucus, I wish all those celebrating Pongal a joyful harvest with health and happiness.
