Statement by the Official Opposition on Nelson Mandela International Day

Official Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair made the following statement on Nelson Mandela International Day:

“Today, New Democrats join people around the world to celebrate the courage of Nelson Mandela – a key figure in the fight for human rights and racial equality.

One of the greatest politicians of our time, he fought racial oppression in South Africa and inspired positive social change all over the world. He left a profound imprint on our hearts and lives.

In his memory, I invite Canadians to devote their time to giving back in his honour. On this day of recognition, the United Nations and the Nelson Mandela Foundation invite all citizens to devote 67 minutes to helping others.

Let’s honour his memory and build a world that is more peaceful and just.”
