Statement by Official Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair on Rainbow Day on Parliament Hill

The Leader of the Official Opposition, Tom Mulcair, made the following statement for Rainbow Day on Parliament Hill:

“On behalf of the NDP caucus in Ottawa, I want to commend all those taking part in Rainbow Day on Parliament Hill.

Jer’s Vision and the staff on the Hill are offering young Canadians from the LGBT community a unique experience: the chance to shadow an openly LGBT Member of Parliament for the day and see what a positive impact they can have.

New Democrats are proud of our long history that celebrates and encourages the participation of the LGBT community in Canada’s political process. In fact, the very first openly gay Member of Parliament was a New Democrat.

Today, we have five NDP MPs participating in this important mentorship program: Dany Morin, Randall Garrison, Libby Davies, Philip Toone and Craig Scott.

In Canada, diversity is one of our great strengths. So building a more inclusive Canada must be everyone’s responsibility. As Canada’s Official Opposition, we’re proud to do our part—today and every day.”
