Statement by Official Opposition leader Tom Mulcair on the November 1984 pogroms in India

NDP leader Tom Mulcair made the following statement on the 30th anniversary of the November 1984 pogroms in India:

On this 30th anniversary of the tragedy of the November 1984 pogroms in India, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the families of the thousands of victims of the anti-Sikh attacks that took place in New Delhi and in other areas of the country.

New Democrats stand in solidarity with the Sikh community and with independent human rights organizations who are still seeking answers on this tragedy.

The survivors of the 1984 pogroms, as well as victims’ loved ones, have waited too long for answers. The truth must be brought to light and those guilty must be brought to justice.

Today, thirty years after these terrible events, we also remember those of many different faiths and backgrounds who provided refuge and assistance to Sikh families during the 1984 Sikh Pogroms, at serious risk to themselves and their families.

As the search for justice and truth for the victims and survivors continues, we must also prioritize rehabilitation and support for the broken families, especially the widows. We won’t let them be forgotten.”
