Statement from Official Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair on Alice Munro winning the Nobel Prize for literature

It is with great joy that I congratulate Alice Munro on being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. The first Canadian based writer to receive this most prestigious award, our whole country is proud today of her achievement.

This latest honour is one of many Ms. Munro has received, including the Man Booker International Prize, two Giller Prizes, three Governor General’s Literary Awards, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, the Marian Engel Award and the American National Book Critics Circle Award.

Munro’s richly evocative short stories have helped tell Canada’s story – both to Canadians and to others around the world.

This achievement also highlights the importance of supporting our writers and other artists – something we believe should be a priority for the federal government.
