Statement by the Official Opposition Leader on the passing of Sir Run Run Shaw

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Sir Run Run Shaw. He will be remembered as a media pioneer whose important contributions to Chinese cinema and television were felt in Hong Kong and around the world.

Sir Shaw will also be remembered as a generous philanthropist and his legacy, through the Shaw Prize, will continue for generations.

The enormous impact of Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited and Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) has also been felt here in Canada—where Chinese-Canadian families gather to enjoy their nightly programing. Many talented Chinese-Canadians have also gone to Hong Kong for key roles in TVB television series.

On behalf of all New Democrats, I want to express my sincere condolences to Mr. Shaw’s loved ones as they mourn this great loss.
