Statement by the Official Opposition on International Day of La Francophonie

Official Opposition Francophonie critic Anne-Marie Day (Charlesbourg – Haute-Saint-Charles) made the following statement on the International Day of La Francophonie :

“Today we are celebrating francophonie in Canada and around the world.

International Francophonie Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our rich francophone culture in Quebec, in Canada and around the world.

“All citizens that live in French and assert their right to be served in their language contribute to maintaining a vibrant French culture around the world. Francophones provide important contributions to our cultural, economic and political diversity in Canada, and their impact can be felt across the country.

“On this International Day of La Francophonie, we must remember the importance of asserting our culture and spreading our language. Let’s make sure we celebrate our francophone culture and heritage so that future generations can continue to live in French.

“The NDP is committed to protecting the French language and the equality of status of both official languages in the federal government. We are proud to have passed a bill to ensure that officers of Parliament must be bilingual at hiring.

“The NDP will continue to ensure that francophone communities from Caraquet to Victoria continue to thrive.”
