New Democrat critic for Employment and Social Development Jinny Sims (Newton – North-Delta) made the following statement on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty:
“Poverty affects people all over the world and from all walks of life. Many of them live in extreme poverty with less than $1.25 per day.
Poverty is a vicious circle that leads to violence and discrimination. That is why we must do everything in our power to fight this scourge which kills more people each year than war. Although a rich country, Canada is no exception and it’s particularly disheartening to see it among our First Nations communities and our veterans.
We must act to ensure that all Canadians enjoy the same opportunities. By fighting these inequalities and poverty we will be able to build lasting peace.”
