Statement by the Official Opposition on the International Day of Disabled Persons

The Official Opposition critic for Persons with Disabilities Manon Perreault (Montcalm) made the following statement on the International Day of Disabled Persons:

“Today the New Democratic Party would like to highlight the important and positive contributions of persons with disabilities to our communities.

The objective of this day is to encourage the participation of persons with disabilities in the social life and development of our communities—just like everyone else.

The government has a role to play in preventing Canadians with disabilities from being victims of poverty or from facing barriers to their inclusion in school, the job market, recreational activities and social life. Persons with disabilities deserve a physical and social environment that takes into account their specific needs and allows them to reach their full potential.

The NDP is determined to build an inclusive society where no one is left behind. We urge the government to fulfil its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities so that they can lead a more independent life and play a more important role in society.”
