Statement from the Official Opposition Energy Critic on Kinder Morgan’s application to the National Energy Board

Official Opposition Energy and Natural Resources Critic Peter Julian (Burnaby—New Westminster) made the following statement today in response to Kinder Morgan Canada’s application to the National Energy Board for expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline.

“New Democrats believe that proper community consultation and strong environmental assessments are the bedrock of sustainable development.

We are aware of widespread public concern about the Kinder Morgan proposal. Many British Columbians are worried about the increased environmental risks of an expanded pipeline, the protection of value-added jobs and the impact of dramatically increasing tanker traffic in the Vancouver harbour.

These concerns need a full hearing. That’s why New Democrats strongly oppose the arbitrary and inappropriate constraints the Conservatives have put on pipeline reviews.

The reality is this project cannot be approved in the absence of a thorough, credible, complete environmental assessment.

New Democrats will be following the process closely and we will take every opportunity to represent the views of our constituents, including by intervening in the NEB process.

You can count on New Democrats to ensure that development projects are sustainable and benefit Canadians . That`s why we are committed to ensure an effective and efficient review process that is fair, open and transparent.”
